If you are a student worried that artificial intelligence will eliminate your first job, you are not being dramatic. The concern is real. Every week brings another headline about automation, shrinking teams, AI tools, and changing career paths.
But I want to offer you a more useful perspective.
Students often fear artificial intelligence more than employers expect it to disrupt entry level work. That difference creates what I call the AI anxiety gap.
According to the Prospects and Institute of Student Employers report on AI and early careers, curiosity and anxiety are the two most common reactions among students and early career professionals. Thirteen percent of respondents had already changed their career plans because of AI, while another third had considered doing so.
At the same time, 53% of employers surveyed expected entry level hiring to remain stable over the next three years. Only 17% anticipated reductions, and no employers expected full automation of entry level tasks during that period.
That does not mean you should ignore AI. It means fear should not make your career decisions for you.
The short answer: Will AI eliminate entry level jobs?
AI will change many entry level jobs, but it is unlikely to eliminate every opportunity for new professionals.
Artificial intelligence is especially useful for routine tasks such as basic research, repetitive administration, first draft writing, translation, and information gathering. Employers still need people who can use judgment, communicate clearly, collaborate with others, understand context, solve unfamiliar problems, and take responsibility for results.
The strongest candidates will not be those who pretend AI does not exist. They will be people who learn how to work with it while strengthening the human skills that technology cannot replace easily.
That is where your strategy begins.
Why students feel more anxious than employers
Students usually see AI from the outside. You see headlines about companies reducing staff. You hear professionals debate whether certain degrees are still valuable. You may wonder whether the skills you are learning today will matter by the time you graduate.
Employers see the situation differently. They are not only asking, “Can AI complete this task?” They are also asking:
- Can the tool produce accurate work?
- Who will review the output?
- Can someone explain the decision behind the result?
- What happens when the situation is unusual or sensitive?
- Can the employee communicate with customers, colleagues, and community partners?
- Does the person know when not to use AI?
This is the difference between a task and a role.
AI may complete one part of a job. That does not mean it can carry the full responsibility of the position. A first year employee may still be hired to learn, observe, ask questions, build relationships, and develop professional judgment.
The techUK analysis of the early career research describes the shift as more evolutionary than revolutionary. In many workplaces, roles are being reshaped rather than simply erased.

Exposure is not the same as readiness
Many students have already used AI for schoolwork, job searches, resumes, interview preparation, or research. However, using a tool does not automatically mean you know how to use it well in a professional setting.
A 2026 Monster report on graduate AI readiness found that nearly 89% of graduates worry AI or automation could replace entry level roles. The report also found that 58% feel anxious about using AI in their future workplace, while only 36% believe colleges are adequately preparing students for professional AI use.
This tells me that the problem is not simply a lack of technology. The larger problem is a lack of clear guidance.
You need to know:
- Which AI tools are appropriate for your field
- How to check whether an AI response is accurate
- When human judgment must lead
- How to protect confidential or private information
- How to disclose AI use when appropriate
- How to use AI without losing your own voice
- How to show employers what you can do beyond generating an answer
Your goal is not to become dependent on AI. Your goal is to become the person who can direct, evaluate, improve, and responsibly apply technology.
Turn anxiety into an AI readiness plan
When I returned to school after a 13 year gap, I understood what it felt like to question whether I belonged. I had spent years away from the classroom, and I knew I could not afford to treat education as a passive experience.
I had to see education as an investment in me and a launchpad for success.
You can use the same mindset with AI. Instead of asking, “Will AI take my job?” ask, “What can I learn now that will make me more useful in an AI shaped workplace?”
Start with these five steps.
1. Study the tasks inside your target career
Do not research only job titles. Read current job descriptions and identify the work employers actually expect.
Create two columns:
- Tasks AI may support
- Responsibilities that require human judgment
For example, AI may help summarize information or organize a first draft. You may still need to interpret the information, explain it to another person, make a recommendation, or adjust the work for a specific audience.
This exercise gives you a more realistic picture of the career.
2. Build one practical AI skill
You do not need to master every new tool. Choose one skill that connects to your academic or career direction.
You might practice:
- Writing better instructions for an AI tool
- Summarizing research and checking the original sources
- Organizing ideas before creating a presentation
- Comparing multiple drafts for clarity
- Creating a simple workflow for repetitive tasks
- Identifying errors, bias, or missing context in AI output
Keep a record of what you tried, what worked, and what you changed. That record can become career evidence.
3. Protect your human advantage
AI can produce language, patterns, and options. You bring your lived experience, values, relationships, curiosity, and responsibility.
Build skills such as:
- Clear communication
- Critical thinking
- Listening
- Collaboration
- Creativity
- Ethical decision making
- Cultural awareness
- Adaptability
These are not soft extras. They are career assets.
The Walton Family Foundation and Gallup research found that 41% of Gen Z respondents feel anxious about AI. It also found that students who said their schools allowed AI use were more likely to feel prepared after graduation than students whose schools did not allow it.
Guidance builds confidence. Practice builds readiness.
4. Create work samples
Do not wait for an employer to give you permission to demonstrate your ability.
Use a class assignment, community project, campus organization, or personal interest to create a small portfolio piece. Show your process:
- What problem were you addressing?
- What information did you gather?
- How did you use AI, if at all?
- How did you check the results?
- What decisions did you make?
- What did you learn?
A thoughtful work sample shows more than tool familiarity. It shows judgment.

5. Ask employers better questions
Career conversations can help you replace assumptions with information.
When speaking with a professional, ask:
- How is AI changing the daily work in your role?
- Which tasks are becoming more automated?
- Which skills are becoming more valuable?
- What do successful entry level employees do especially well?
- What should a student practice before applying?
- How does your organization train new employees to use AI responsibly?
These questions help you understand the real workplace instead of relying on the loudest headline.

Do not let fear choose your life purpose
AI anxiety can make you abandon a field before you understand it. That is risky.
Some students may leave careers that still need talented people. Others may rush toward technology roles they do not actually enjoy. Neither decision is strategic if fear is driving the process.
I encourage students to explore. Throw everything against the wall. Try projects. Speak with professionals. Take classes that stretch you. Notice what holds your attention and what gives you energy.
Your life purpose may not appear as one perfect answer. It may become clearer as you test possibilities and pay attention to the problems you care enough to help solve.

A seven day plan for moving from fear to action
This week, take one practical step each day:
- Day one: Read three job descriptions in your target field.

- Day four: Practice one responsible AI workflow.
- Day five: Create or improve one work sample.
- Day six: Contact a professional with two focused questions.
- Day seven: Write down what you learned and what you will try next.
You do not need to solve the future in one week. You need to build evidence that you can learn, adapt, and contribute.

The future belongs to prepared people
The AI anxiety gap is real, but it does not have to define your future.
Employers are changing how work gets done. Students are trying to understand what that change means. The opportunity is to close the gap through practical experience, honest guidance, responsible technology use, and stronger career planning.
Do not compete with AI by trying to become less human. Become more observant, more adaptable, more thoughtful, and more capable of using tools with purpose.
Your education can still be a launchpad for success. Your degree can still open doors. Your skills, relationships, and decisions will continue to matter.
