Most people have been taught to associate innovation with software, startups, and people who can build products from scratch. That picture is incomplete. Some of the most meaningful innovation happens in schools, nonprofits, and public service spaces where people are solving everyday problems for real communities.
I am a "non tech" intrapreneur. I do not write code. I do not build apps. But I have spent my career transforming education and scholarship systems from the inside out. My journey as an intrapreneur did not start with a tech degree. It started with a 13 year gap in my own education and a bold decision to return to the classroom. That decision was my first "investment in me," and it became the foundation for the work I now share with others.

You do not need a computer science degree to challenge the status quo. You just need the mindset of an intrapreneur.
What is an Intrapreneur anyway?
An intrapreneur is someone who behaves like an entrepreneur but within an existing organization. You are not starting a new company from scratch. Instead, you are using the resources, the brand, and the infrastructure of your current workplace to build something better.
Think of it like this. An entrepreneur builds the ship. An intrapreneur looks at the ship they are already on and says, "We could get to our destination twice as fast if we just adjusted these sails and fixed the leak in the hull."
I see intrapreneurship as a necessity, not a luxury. When I founded Spark-ED University, it was not because I wanted to build a tech platform. It was because I saw students struggling to navigate the "debt trap" of higher education. I saw a system that needed a bridge between classroom learning and career success.
The "Non Tech" Advantage
There is actually a massive advantage to being a non tech innovator. While the techies are focused on the "how" (the software), you are focused on the "who" (the people).
As a San Antonio Education Speaker, I often tell my audiences that the most valuable skill in the modern economy is not coding. It is empathy combined with strategy. If you can understand the pain points of a student in Bexar County or a parent looking for childcare scholarships, you have the data you need to innovate.
You do not need to build a new database to be an intrapreneur. You might just need to change a workflow that has been the same for twenty years. You might need to rewrite a scholarship application so it does not feel like an interrogation. That is innovation. That is intrapreneurship.
My Journey: From Retail to Award Winning Intrapreneur
I spent 13 years away from school. I was working in retail, doing the grind, and feeling like my life purpose was just out of reach. When I finally went back to college, I did not go back to become a coder. I went back to find my voice.
That journey took me from local classrooms to international study experiences in Taiwan and China. It led me to win the Top 100 Leaders in Education Award and the Outstanding Intrapreneur Award in the Not for Profit Sector from the Global Intrapreneurs Institute.
I did not win those awards because I built the next big app. I won them because I treated my role in education as a strategic tool. I looked at the gaps in how we fund education and how we prepare students for the real world, and I started building bridges.
If you are a student or a professional who feels "behind" because of a gap in your resume, remember this. That gap is not a weakness. It is your perspective. It is the very thing that will allow you to see the problems that people who followed the "standard path" are blind to.
3 Ways to Practice Intrapreneurship Today
You do not need permission to be an intrapreneur. You just need to start. Here is how you can begin innovating in your current role in Bexar County.
1. Identify the "Friction"
Every organization has friction. These are the things that make people sigh and say, "That is just the way we have always done it."
Maybe it is a 15 page paper form that could be a simple 3 question digital survey. Maybe it is a meeting that happens every Monday but results in zero action items. As a "non tech" intrapreneur, your job is to find that friction and propose a smoother path. You are creating stronger momentum for your colleagues and the people you serve.
2. Test Widely, Then Follow What Works
One of my core beliefs is that you have to explore broadly before your purpose becomes clear. Intrapreneurship works the same way. You should be constantly testing small ideas.
Do not try to overhaul the entire scholarship department in one day. Instead, try one new way to reach students on TikTok or Instagram. If it works, keep doing it. If it does not, you have learned something valuable. This is the "Spark-ED" mindset. It is about experimentation and purpose driven action.
3. Build Your Network of "Yes" People
Innovation is lonely if you try to do it by yourself. You need a tribe. In San Antonio, we have an incredible community of educators and leaders who want to see change.
Find the people in your organization who are also tired of the status quo. These are your co conspirators. When I talk about Bexar County Career Success, I am not talking about a solo journey. I am talking about a collective movement to make education a strategic tool for everyone.
Education as a Starting Point for Growth
I often say that your degree is a lease, but your skills are the title. In the world of intrapreneurship, your greatest skill is your ability to learn and adapt.
Whether you are a parent trying to help your child navigate the scholarship maze or a professional looking to make a bigger impact in your nonprofit, remember that education can open the door to bigger opportunities. It is not just about the letters after your name. It is about the ability to see a problem and have the confidence to solve it.
I have spent years perfecting scholarship strategies for debt free education because I know that financial stress is the biggest killer of innovation. When you are not worried about how to pay for your next semester, you are free to think about how to change the world.
The Cost of the "Wait and See" Mindset
The most expensive habit you can have is waiting. Waiting for the "right time" to share your idea. Waiting until you have "enough experience" to lead.
I waited 13 years to go back to school. I do not regret the journey, but I do know the cost of delay. If you have an idea that can help a student in Bexar County or improve a program in your office, do not wait for a tech team to build a platform for it. Start where you are with what you have.
The world does not just need more apps. It needs more people who are brave enough to be intrapreneurs in the industries that matter most. It needs more "non tech" innovators who are focused on people, purpose, and impact.
