If you’re a student walking across that stage this month, or watching your friends do it while you still have a year or two left, you might be feeling a familiar, nagging knot in your stomach. It’s that “Did I miss it?” feeling.
The career fairs in February felt like a lifetime ago. The big corporate recruiting cycles from last October seem like ancient history. You might think the "hiring season" has passed you by, leaving you to scramble for whatever’s left.
But I want to let you in on a secret: May isn't the end. It’s the hidden goldmine.
I’ve been where you are. I spent 13 years away from the classroom before I finally decided to return and treat my education as an investment in me. I know what it’s like to feel “behind.” But when I launched Spark-ED, I realized that the traditional calendar isn’t the only way to win. There is a massive, often overlooked hiring wave happening right now, and if you’re ready to catch it, it can be the launchpad for your entire career.
The Myth of the "Missed Opportunity"
We’re told that if you don’t have a job offer by Spring Break, you’ve failed. That is simply not true.
While the giant firms do their hiring early, the vast majority of organizations, especially the ones where you can make a real, intrapreneurial impact, are actually just getting started in May.
Think about it: many managers are just now getting their final budgets for the new fiscal year. They finally know exactly how many people they can hire. Plus, they want those roles filled before the “summer slump” hits in July and August. They are looking for talent right now, and they want people who are ready to hit the ground running.

Why May is Actually a Goldmine
So, why is this month so special? Let’s break down the “why” so you can stop stressing and start strategizing.
1. The Graduation Alignment
Companies aren’t silly. They know that the biggest influx of fresh, hungry talent happens in May. Many hiring managers purposely wait to post their “entry-level” or “junior” roles until they know the candidates are actually available to start full-time. If you see a job posted today, they likely want you in the office by June 1.
2. Budget Refreshes and New Projects
In many industries, the spring brings a "fresh start" mentality. New projects are being greenlit, and departments are being expanded. This is especially true in the nonprofit and education sectors, where I spend a lot of my time. At United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County, for example, we see how community partnerships and programs often ramp up during these transition months.
3. Faster Hiring Cycles
In October, a company might take three months to interview you because they aren’t in a rush. In May? They are in a hurry. They want to get you onboarded before the key decision-makers go on their summer vacations. This means fewer rounds of “let me get back to you” and more “can you start Monday?”
The Spark-ED Strategy: Launching with Purpose
At Spark-ED, I always tell students that education is a launchpad, not just a trophy. If you’re looking for a job in May, don’t just “throw everything against the wall” without a plan. You need a purpose-driven search.
If you’re feeling stuck, check out my post on 50 career success examples from students who returned to education. It’s full of stories of people who didn’t follow the “standard” path but still found their way to a career of impact.
Stop Applying, Start Solving
When you look at a job description, don’t ask, “Do I fit this?” Ask, “What problem are they trying to solve?” Intrapreneurship—the act of behaving like an entrepreneur within an organization—starts during the interview. Show them that you aren’t just looking for a paycheck; you’re looking to be the solution to their spring hiring headache.

3 Practical Moves to Make Right Now
If you want to catch this wave, you need to move differently than the crowd. Here are three strategies I used to secure multiple scholarships and early career opportunities:
- The “Scholarship Mentality” for Cover Letters: You know all those essays you wrote for scholarships? (If you haven’t read my Scholarship Secrets Revealed, do that first!) Use that same storytelling energy in your cover letters. Don’t just list your skills; tell the story of your purpose.
- Network with Intrapreneurs: Look for people on LinkedIn who have “Innovation” or “Program Coordinator” in their titles. These are the people building the new projects that need staffing. Send a simple note: “I see the impact you’re making in [Industry], and I’m looking to bring my skills to a team that values innovation. Are you hiring for the summer wave?”
- Leverage Your Gap (or Your Journey): If you’re a non-traditional student like me, don’t hide your 13-year gap or your unconventional path. That is your superpower. It shows resilience, maturity, and a clear sense of “why.” Employers in the May wave are looking for people who won’t need their hands held.
You Belong in the Room
One of the biggest hurdles for students right now is “impostor syndrome.” You see everyone posting their “I’m happy to announce…” posts on LinkedIn, and you feel like you’re failing.
But remember: You Belong Here.

Whether you are a first-generation student, someone returning to school after a decade, or a parent trying to balance it all, your perspective is needed. The “hidden wave” of hiring is looking for diverse voices. They aren’t looking for robots; they’re looking for people who have unlocked their opportunity and are ready to lead with impact.
It’s Never Too Late to Launch
My journey wasn’t a straight line. It was a series of pivots, bold decisions, and catching the right waves at the right time. If you haven’t found your “what” yet, don’t panic. Use this May to explore. Throw things against the wall. See what sticks.
Education is the most powerful tool you have to change your life, but it only works if you use it to launch.
